Mentees

  • Be 19+ years old
  • Be a current member of the ACC Columbia Mountains Section (applications from non-members will not be considered)
  • Adhere to the ACC code of conduct
  • Be able to attend the kickoff event on Thursday, Jan 8th 5:45-7:30 pm at the Community Centre
  • Be available at least 2 days per month for outings to account for conditions and mentor availability
  • Have completed their AST 1
  • Have a good outdoor fitness
  • Have a minimum of 2 days of ski touring/splitboarding experience before the program starts
  • Have a clear understanding that mentors are volunteers NOT guides, and will not take full responsibility for your well-being and safety while in the backcountry above what could be expected from any reasonable touring partner

A note about applying as a mentee: Typically, this programs receive substantially more mentee applications than mentors are available. Please strongly consider whether you can commit to making yourself available for 1 of the 2 days your mentor suggests. In addition, we cannot guarantee that your mentor will, in fact, complete 4 days of touring with you.

Selection Process

Mentors will choose mentees based on their applications.

If there are more people interested in being mentees than there are mentors, their names will be prioritized for next season as long as we run the program again.

Program Perks

  • FREE entry to the Saturday night event of the 2026 Split//Ski Festival for mentors and mentees.
  • Mentors get the opportunity to teach good stewardship practices (ie. Rogers Pass winter permit compliance), build confidence in their own decision-making, and grow their outdoor leadership experience. Plus, mentoring programs help underrepresented groups get started in the sport without relying solely on social connections.
  • Mentees get to meet mentors who can help them have satisfying backcountry touring experiences.
