Trips and Events

We offer trips of all levels for a variety of ages. Youth programs will be included in this. We will organize volunteer trail, hut, or other maintenance work parties. There will be opportunities for personal development training courses with local ACMG Guides or with more experienced trip leaders for mentorship. Training and Leadership Programs will be our priority to educate trip leaders and members who are interested in furthering their mountain skill set.

To participate, you must:

  • Have a current membership in the Alpine Club of Canada – Columbia Mountains Section
  • Meet the trip-specific experience and gear requirements

Summer Youth Climbing Series: Saturdays in May, June, Sep.

ACMG-certified rock guides, Penny Goddard and Josh Rowlands will be leading the program which is made possible thanks to the Revelstoke Community Foundation and Columbia Basin Trust – Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Program.

Times: 8:45 to 12:00 for ages 6-9 and 12:45 to 4:30 for ages 10-15

There will be a maximum of 6 spots per session.

Cost: $20 booking fee for each session. Bookings will close the day before the session. Registration opens May 7 at this link

Women’s Sport Climbing Session – May 17

Volunteer leader July Wilkey will be leading a women’s sport climbing session at Shaketown. Participants will meet at Shaketown (inquire in registration email if you’re not sure about the location).

Time: 4pm-7pm

Required Gear and Experience: Harness, belay device, climbing shoes, helmet. A good understanding of safe top rope and lead belay techniques and experience with top roping (lead belaying not necessary).

Mt. Begbie Trail Work – May 22

Disc Golf Meetup – May 24

Location: The Corner of Oscar St and Maplewood St, the entrance to the Illecillewaet River Trail that leads to the Frisbee golf course (50.990966, -118.178212. If showing up late, here are the coordinates for the beginning of the course: (50.990536, -118.172927)

Equipment: Beverages of choice and discs. Dogs welcome!

Weekly Climbing Meet-Up: Wednesdays May 25-Aug. 31

Member’s Night – May 27

Meet other members and the volunteer board of directors, enjoy food, and learn about social, trail, and leadership volunteer opportunities. Mock anchors will be set up for cleaning practice. Barbecue at 6pm, short presentation at 7pm.

Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm

Wilderness First Aid Course – June 11, 12

Get WFA certified by Wilderness Medical Associates and be more useful in the backcountry whether you’re out with your friends or leading organized groups. Volunteer leaders can get up to $150 of the course fee reimbursed by leading 3 days of activities with the club ($50/day). This certification is the minimum requirement for leading trips in the backcountry through our section.

Time: 8am-5pm

Cost: $300

Equipment: Camp chair, Notebook and pen, bagged lunch, backpack with what you would normally take with you on a day hike

Intro to Rock Climbing – June 4

Get the basics you need to be safe at outdoor climbing crags. This is a great opportunity to get prepared to attend our weekly climbing meetups.

Time: 10am-4pm

Location: To be decided/shared with confirmed participants

Cost: $10

Required Equipment: Helmet, Harness, Climbing Shoes, Belay Device, Locking Carabiner. Optional: Chalk, Belay Gloves

Lead Sport Climbing Progression Clinic – June 5

This is intended for climbers to develop the skills required for outdoor lead sport climbing including various ways to set up anchors, cleaning (various techniques) and when to use these different techniques.

Time & Location: Shared with confirmed participants (near Revelstoke)

Prerequisite Skills & Gear: Need to have basic outdoor lead climbing skills (at least lead climbed a handful of times) and know how to lead belay. Helmet, Harness, Climbing Shoes, Belay Device, Locking Carabiner | Optional: Chalk, Belay Gloves

Women’s Sport Climbing Session – June 13 & 27:

Volunteer leader July Wilkey will be leading women’s sport climbing sessions. Stanley Mitchell Hut Mountaineering Trip – July 8-11

An introduction to mountaineering or progress mountaineering skills for those who have done it before led by volunteer leaders. Participants will learn/progress mountaineering skills including glacier travel, how/when to use equipment, rope management, etc.

Prerequisites & Gear: No mountaineering experience is necessary, however participants will need to have a basic fitness level that will allow them to get up to the hut (10km, 500m elevation gain) and then be able to do long days of hiking, scrambling, and glacier travel over the next few days (with a lot of elevation gain). Family Backpacking in the Bugaboos – July 12-15

Volunteer leaders Ben and July Wilkey will be leading a family backpacking trip (ages 8+). Participants should have their own backpacking gear, although some gear for kids may be available to borrow. No prior backpacking experience is required. No cost. Additional details will be provided at a pre-trip meeting one week beforehand. Trail Building Workshop – July 16, 17

Free workshop with renowned trail builder Mark Wood from North Vancouver made possible by Recreation Sites and Trails of British Columbia. Time and location will be shared with registered participants, but will be close to Revelstoke. Required gear and experience: eye protection, gloves. Women’s Beginning Backpacking to Jade Lake- July 30-31

Volunteer leaders will be leading a women’s backpacking trip to Jade Lake in Mt. Revelstoke National Park. This program is designed for women who enjoy hiking but are new to overnight hikes and want to give it a try in a welcoming and supportive environment. We welcome any trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming participants who feel comfortable in a female-oriented environment. Participants need to be able to carry a pack (about 40 lbs) for about 10km each day with 500m of elevation gain each day. Participants will spend the whole day hiking with lots of water and snack breaks, so you don’t need to worry about being “too slow”. Required gear: Backpack, hiking boots, water bladder, food (two lunches, 1 supper, 1 breakfast, snacks), sleeping pad, sleeping bag, warm and rain layers, gaiters, hiking poles, personal first aid kit. Additional gear (tents, water filtration)will be provided by leaders. No prior backpacking experience is required. Cost is $35. Heli-Assisted Trail Work at Mt. Begbie – August 8-10

We’ll be working on improvements to the campsite including installing bear-proof food lockers as well as trail maintenance. Required gear and experience: eye protection, gloves, camping gear. Priority will be given to those who have attended previous trail work sessions with the ACC Columbia Mountains Section. Pre-registration is required by emailing bwilkey@acccolumbiamountains.com.

Youth Mountaineering Camp Mcrae Lakes – August 9-11

Derek Glowacki will be leading this intro to mountaineering trip for youth ages 12+. Youth should have experience with backcountry camping. Specialized gear for mountaineering will be available to borrow. More information about gear will be communicated before the trip. Mt. Begbie Mountaineering Trip – August 20

Volunteer leaders Bryce and Antoine will be leading a day trip to summit Mt. Begbie with a 4:30 am start. Participant skill level should be: expert hikers, moderate scramblers, moderate climbers (knowledge of belaying basics, etc.), and familiarity with glacial travel and crevasse rescue systems. Required gear: hiking boots, crampons (compatible with boots), hiking poles (if desired), mountaineering ice axe, clothing for elements, water, food, headlamp, small personal first aid kit, harness, prusik, 120cm sling, belay device for rappelling, 2 locking carabiners, 2 non-locking carabiners, climbing helmet, sunglasses, whistle. Some climbing gear may be available to borrow. Cost is $10 per person. Preregistration is required. Mt. Begbie Heli-Assisted Mountaineering – August 28

Get a taste of mountaineering and scenery with a heli-assist to the Mt. Begbie Campground before continuing on foot up Mt. Begbie.

Time: 6:30am-4:30pm

Location: Meet at Glacier Helicopters, with ultimate destination Mt. Begbie

Cost: Dependent on number of registrants, but estimated around $500

Pre-requisites: Participants must have the fitness and ability to hike travel on uneven terrain for a full day. We will be ascending and descending 700m of elevation over about 6 kilometres. You will need to be able to climb a steep snow slope and large boulders that require high steps and precise foot placement. Experience travelling on glaciers, climbing, or rappelling is not required but encouraged.

Equipment: Sturdy hiking boots or summer mountaineering boots, harness, helmet, belay device, 2 locking carabiners, glacier crampons, mountaineering axe, daypack

Weekly drop-in nordic ski meetup led by volunteer leaders Bryce Schroers and Katee Pederson.

January 8, 2022 – Ski Touring Rogers Pass

Led by volunteer leader Bryce Schroers with support from Joe Dzurik and Katee Pederson. Location is to-be-decided based on conditions with an estimated elevation gain of between 700 and 1000 metres. The goal will be to develop participants’ confidence in navigating avalanche terrain. Participants will be contacted by email before the trip with information about where to meet and at what time. AST 1 and some experience touring (should not be your first time out).

Get started planning local trips outdoors near Revelstoke, BC. This online event is led by Alpine Club of Canada Columbia Mountains Section leaders Bryce Schroers and Joe Dzurik. February 25-28 – Asulkan Hut Trip

Asulkan 4-day Hut Trip. Led by volunteer leaders Bryce Schroers and Joe Dzurik. This trip is a great introduction to multi-day winter trips with the comfort of the Alpine Club’s own Asulkan hut. We’ll work on progressing our skills in evaluating and skiing challenging avalanche terrain with the added elements that come with a multi-day trip. The exact time and location of the meeting will be confirmed with registrants by email.

Pre-requisites: Participants must be fully vaccinated (minimum 2 shots) ACC Columbia Mountains section members who have prior experience touring (5x minimum), an AST or AIARE Level 1 course, and appropriate avalanche rescue equipment (including transceiver, shovel, and probe).

Parking is $6 per vehicle (cash). Otherwise carpooling with a car that has a season’s pass may be available.

March 12 – Rogers Pass Ski Touring

Rogers Pass Touring Day March 12, 2022. Led by volunteer leader Bryce Shroers. The goal is to progress the group’s ability to skin up, assess avalanche terrain, and make safe decisions. The approximate elevation gain will be 700-1000 metres. Participants will be contacted by email before the trip with information about where to meet and at what time.
